We've checked the most recent data, and guess what, most Americans still aren't getting enough magnesium...
According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 1999 through 2014, researchers found on average that 67% of the population gets less than the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) -- the absolute minimum amount of magnesium needed to avoid a deficiency.
As you can see from the chart on the right, Magnesium intake less than the RDA is fairly consistent over the 15 years measured suggesting a major issue with mineral content in food.
The soil our foods are grown in today are severely over farmed and therefore depleted of critical minerals like magnesium.
In fact, we were curious to see how much magnesium is present in organic, sprouted almonds -- one of the most magnesium rich foods -- so we sent a bag off to a 3rd party lab for testing.
And, the results showed one ounce of almonds yields 71mg... that means you'd have to eat 6oz a day to get 400mg of magnesium (the RDA is 420mg). That's nearly 1,000 calories!
There's no doubt there's a need for daily supplementation of magnesium to fill the void in our food content.
